Bloom

Overview

Bloom is northern Ontario’s newest music festival presented by Northern Lights Festival Boréal (NLFB), bringing world music, across multiple venues, to Sudbury, Canada.

I was hired as a freelance designer in 2019 & 2020 to create the branding, poster, festival signage and wayfinding, and promotional materials.

Exploration

The main challenge was to represent world music in an unexpected and exciting way. Second to that, the festival director expressed the want to have a logotype that would be used in future festivals, and for the poster and festival branding to focus around the word mark. I presented a variety of concepts, based in themes of celebrating cross cultural connections, eclectic blossoms, and the spring melt associated with March in northern Ontario.

Denouement – The Untagnling

The concept that was chosen was a design that draws inspiration from the world’s many flags depicted in an abstract way. I created a logotype that would serve as the festival’s logo for seasons to come.

Final list of items delivered; posters, signage and wayfinding, various stationery and artist passes, program, app elements, digital and printed ads across various platforms, and social media content.

Bloom 2 – Exploration

The client expressed wanting to keep the Bloom branding consistent through each festival season so the challenge for Bloom 2 was to evolve the branding enough to make it stand out from the previous year’s materials.

Denouement – The Untagnling

After much debate, sometimes the simplest solution is the best, the client chose a concept that uses a ribbon/flag element to create the “2”, which is used to tie each piece together to create a cohesive design language.

With this project I was able to go beyond the typical list of branding items and worked with the design files from Manitoulin Brewing Co. to “Bloomify” a label as a collaboration for the festival.
